I love many types of chili. This is my favorite when the weather gets cold. It’s rich, intensely flavorful and dark like the winter nights in Washington.
This recipe is packed with beans and is made with ground turkey and olive oil, making it ideal for people following the Mediterranean, DASH, or MIND diets.
Winter Chili

Ingredients
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 large onion finely chopped
- 8 ounce stock
- 1 14½ ounce can diced tomatoes
- ½ cup coffee
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar or equivalent sweetner
- 1 tablespoon chile sauce I recommend Aardvark
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1/2 hot pepper seeded and finely chopped, or to taste
- 1½ tablespoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- 2 15½ oz can can black beans 1⅓ cup dried
- 1 15½ oz can can chickpeas ⅔ cup dried
Instructions
- Brew coffee and finely chop 1 large onion.
- Heat 2 tablespoon olive oil in a dutch oven or other large pot over medium heat. Add the 1 pound ground turkey, and onions. Sauté until browned, then transfer to a plate.
- Add 8 ounce stock, 1 14½ ounce can diced tomatoes, coffee and tomato paste and stir.
- Add the 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 tablespoon chile sauce, 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, 1/2 hot pepper, 1½ tablespoon ground cumin, 1 teaspoon ground coriander, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, ¾ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon oregano, 2 15½ oz can can black beans1 15½ oz can can chickpeas. Return the meat to the pot. Reduce heat to low and simmer, partly covered, for 3 hour.
- Adjust salt and cayenne pepper as desired and serve.
